Towson’s Best Practices in Assessing General Education Requirements

All best practices meet and surpass the characteristics in Towson’s Guiding Principles for the Assessment of Student Learning.

Best Practice Learning Goals describe what students will know, think, and be able to do upon completion of the requirement. They are clear, measurable, written using action verbs, and most focus on thinking skills rather than conceptual understanding.

    Best Practice Learning Goals

Best Practice Teaching/Learning Strategies address every key learning goal in every section meeting the General Education requirement. It is clear that every student has ample opportunity to master each learning goal through repeated emphasis throughout the course and/or active “hands-on” learning opportunities.

    Best Practice Teaching/Learning Strategies

Best Practice Assessment Methods match the learning goals being assessed and meet at least one of the following criteria: assessments are conducted systematically (repeatedly, on a schedule) over time; multiple measures are used; and/or evidence is provided that the assessment methods yield truthful, fair information that can be used with confidence.

    Best Practice Assessment Methods

Best Practice Use of Results are used to modify learning goals, teaching methods, curriculum, and/or assessment strategies, as appropriate. Positive assessment results are shared with appropriate faculty, students and academic administrators.
