Committees
There are eight standing committees of the board of directors. SDS members are encouraged to become actively involved in SDS by volunteering for one or more of its Committees, described below. Please contact the chair directly about your interest.
Annual Meeting Committee
This Committee seeks to make SDS' meetings and publications totally accessible to all members, for example physical access to hotel meeting rooms, sign language interpreters, and non-print materials. The Committee also solicits proposal for papers and other presentations for the Annual Meeting. It finalizes the program on behalf of the Society and is responsible for making the final determination of proposals accepted for presentation.
Policy
This Committee informs the Board of public issues relevant to people with disabilities that may require action on behalf of the Society and assists in drafting statements supporting actions that promote the interests of disability policy.
Finance and Strategic Planning
This committee advises and assists the Board in all matters pertaining to finance and seeks to develop sources of external funding. Currently this Committee has a systematic Strategic Planning project underway.
Membership
This Committee disseminates information about the Society and conducts outreach to encourage new members. It seeks to preserve and enhance both the multidisciplinary nature of the Society and the involvement of disabled and nondisabled participants.
Nominations
The Nominations Committee helps select candidates and conduct elections to the Board of Directors to reflect diversity of physical abilities, academic disciplines, gender, age, race, ethnicity, and educational levels. This Committee submits a slate of candidates solicited from members. Elections occur approximately two months prior to the Annual Meeting. Directors serve three-year terms beginning with the first Annual Meeting following their election. The membership elects approximately one-third of the Board each year.
