The Berkeley Historical Society featured the exhibit from April to October 1997on the history of the disability rights movement, which began in Berkeley, Ca., in the 1960s. The exhibit, created by Linda Rosen and Carole Krezman of Berkeley, featured photographs and materials about the roles the Disabled Students Program at University of California at Berkeley and the city of Berkeley had in empowering people with disabilities to gain independence, education, and employment. The Center for Independent Living in Berkeley is the historical forerunner of the independent living movement in the United States
