For the Beauty of the Earth
(1980)
J. Rutter (b. 1945)
For the beauty of the earth, of the skies,
    of the love which from our birth, over and around us lies:
    Lord of all, to thee we raise this our joyful hymn of praise.
For the beauty of each hour, of the day and of the night,
    Hill and vale and tree and flower, sun and moon and starts of light:
    Lord of all, . . . .
For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, children,
    friends on earth and above, for all gentle thoughts and mild:
    Lord of all, . . . .
For each perfect gift of thine, to our race so freely given,
   graces human and divine, flow'rs of earth and buds of heav'n,
   Lord of all, to thee we raise this our joyful hymn of praise.

Out of the depths have I called to you, O Lord; hear my voice;

For there is forgiveness with you; therefore you shall be feared.
I wait for the Lord; my soul waits for him;  in his word is my hope.
My soul waits for the Lord, more than watchmen for the morning.

Farewell to Alleluia
 (2001)                   O. L. Jones
Alleluia, song of sweetness, voice of joy that cannot die;
     alleluia is the anthem ever dear to choirs on high;
     in the house of God abiding thus they sing eternally.
Alleluia soundest true Jerusalem and free;
     alleluia joyful mother, all thy children sing with thee;
     but by Babylon’s sad waters mourning exiles now are we.
Alleluia cannot always be our song while here below;
     alleluia our transgressions make us for a while forego;
     for the solemn time is coming when our tears for sin must flow.
Therefore in our hymns we pray Thee grant us blessed Trinity,
     At the last to keep Thine Easter, in our home beyond the sky
     there to Thee forever singing alleluia joyfully.

This Is My Beloved: A Baptism Carol (1999)

This is my beloved, my beloved Son, who is pleasing in my sight,
. . . in Him I am well pleased.
When Jesus came to the Jordan, to be baptized by John,
     God's love surrounded those who gathered there.
     The Spirit of the Lord descended as a dove,
        and a voice came from heaven, saying: This is my beloved, . . . .
We bring our children to be baptized and mark them as Christ's own,

Zion Hears the Watchmen; Gloria! (S.140) J. S. Bach (1685-1750)
Herr Jesu, Gottes Sohn!  Hosianna!
Wir folgen all' zum Freudensaal
Und halten mit das Abendmahl.
   Gloria sei dir gesungen
Mit Menschen- und Eng'lischen-zungen,
Mit Harfen und mit Zimbeln schon.
   Von zwölf Perlen sind die Pforten,
An deiner Stadt sind wir Konsorten
Der Engel hoch um deinen Thron.
   Kein Aug hat je gespürt,
  Kein Ohr hat je gehört
Solche Freude.  Des sind wir froh, i-o, i-o,
Ewig in dulci jubilo.
       (From Wachet Auf, Philipp Nicolai, 1599)
Zion hears the watchmen singing,
their hearts spring with joy,
they awake and rise with haste.
    Their Friend comes with glory from heaven,
strong with Grace, powerful with Truth,
their light becomes bright, their star rises.
    Now come, you valued crown,
Lord Jesus, God's son!  Hosanna!
We all follow to the Hall of Joy
and participate in the evening meal.
Gloria be sung to you
with human and angelic tongues,
even with with harps and cymbals.
   Of twelve pearls are the gates
of your city, we are the consort
of the angels high around your throne.

Adam lay ybounden [bound], ... in a bond; four thousand winter thought he not too long.
   And all was for an apple, ... that he took, as clerkès [scribes] finden written in their book.
Nè [never] had the apple taken been, nè had never our lady been heavenè queen.
   Blessed be the time that apple taken was!  Therefore we moun [must] singen,
Deo gracias! [Thanks be to God!]                (Text: Anonymous 15th)
   This 15th century text expresses thanks for Original Sin!  Only through Adam's Sin does it becomes "necessary" for Mary to be "Heavenè Queen," mother of the Savior!

  There Is No Rose (1990)  There Is No Rose (1990)    Stephen Caracciolo (b. 1962)
There is no rose of such vertù [virtue] As is the rose that bare Jesù. Alleluia!
For in this rose was Heav'n and earth and little space, Res miranda! [marvelous thing]!
By that rose we may well see There be one God in person three.  Pares forma.
[Of equal form!]
      Leave we all this worldly mirth, And follow this joyful birth.  Transeamus! [Let us go!]

(Text: Anonymous, ca. 1420)
   Verse mixing two or more languages, all intended for the same purpose, is often called "macaronic," perhaps because macaroni dishes were originally a mish-mash of elements.
   The image of the Rose at Christmas probably finds its origin in the prophecy of Isaiah that a new lineage will come from the stem of Jesse, King David's father.  In the Middle Ages the Rose becomes associated also with Mary.  "Lo, how a rose" is another such text and is presented next, and at the end of this Musical Preparation for The Christ Mass.

ANTHEM(S)   Done, Susan.
Offertory: There Is No Rose             S. Caracciolo
There is no rose of such virtue As is the rose that bare Jesu.
    Alleluia.
For in this rose contained was Heav'n and earth in little space.
    Res miranda [marvelous thing].
By that rose we may well see There be one God in person three,
    pares forma [of equal form].
Leave we all this worldly mirth,  And follow we this joyful birth.
    Transeamus [Let us go / cross over].
There is no rose . . . .
    Gaudeamus [Let us rejoice].
                          (Anonymous, ca. 1420)

Communion:   Es ist ein Ros' (1599)       Harmonization by M. Praetorius (1571-1621)
      See a poetic translation of the original German in Verse 1 and 2 of Hymn 81.

(15th century)
Notes:
   The image of the rose at Christmas originates with the prophecy of Isaiah that a new lineage will come from the stem of Jesse (King David's father).  In the Middle Ages the rose becomes associated also with Mary, as in the first text.  This style of medieval carol, called "macaronic," mixes English and Latin.  Another common and beloved carol is Lo, how a Rose, offered today during communion in the original German.

ANTHEM(S)
Offertory:  Springs in the Desert (1947) . . . . . . . . Arthur B. Jennings (??)
Say to those who are of a fearful heart,
Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come and save you.
The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad;
and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose.
For in the wilderness shall waters break out,
and streams flow in the desert.
And the parched ground shall become a pool,
and the thirsty land springs of water.
A highway shall be there, and it shall be called
The way of holiness; the redeemed shall walk there:
And the ransomed of the Lord shall return with songs
and everlasting joy: and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
