DEPARTMENT OF FAMILY STUDIES &

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Mission Statement

The mission of the Towson University Department of Family Studies & Community Development is to foster a multidisciplinary and multicultural understanding of families, communities, and service systems throughout the lifespan. We aspire to prepare professionals by increasing knowledge of families and communities through a rigorous education grounded in the liberal arts combined with service learning experiences and action-oriented, policy relevant research.  Civic responsibility and professional development are emphasized through exposure to classroom content, development of competencies such as critical thinking skills, and community engagement.  The curriculum is based on nationally recognized disciplines with established requirements in family Life Education, Child Life, and Human Services.

Vision Statement

The Towson University Department of Family Studies & Community Development strives to become a leader within the University of Maryland System in the preparation of graduates in the human services field. The Department supports disciplines grounded with a body of knowledge based on research and practice by certified and licensed professionals and supported by national professional organizations.

Students complete a rigorous curriculum in either undergraduate or graduate education. The undergraduate program prepares graduates for applied human services careers and advanced study in related professional fields working with or on behalf of families. The graduate certificate program prepares students to develop advanced professional competencies infusing evidence-based practice and action research into their education.

The Department is comprised of scholars dedicated to undergraduate and graduate student development and learning. Faculty members contribute to the knowledge of their discipline through dedicated research and practice that supports the changing needs of families and communities in a diverse society.

The curriculum offers in-person learning, web-enhanced coursework, and experiential learning through practicum, internships, and independent study. This variety of teaching modalities further solidifies the importance of service learning and civic engagement in the development of leadership skills necessary for the workplace including: critical analysis and problem solving; teamwork; communication; and professional development.
