CANS - Lab Maintenance Procedures

Once every week  you need to complete the following maintenance on your Maintenance Assignments.

Instructions

    I.  Send Message to PCs
    Using BoPop on  a staff PC, copy/patste the Maintenance Annoucenments and send it to your "Lab / Section" in the Maintenance Assignment.  This will prompt users to move to another PC so you can work on them.
    Follow the instructions below in order as they appear.
    I.  Monitor & CPU
    Dust (gently) with the feather duster:
    Do NOT spray Windex cleaner on dusters
    1. Monitor- udust front, sides, back
    2. CPU (front, sides, back)
    3. Clean monitor screen with paper towel & Windex cleaner

    II.  Keyboards
  1. Tip the keyboard upside down and lean one end on the tabletop 
  2. Tap the back of the keyboard firmly with the palm of  your hand, moving down the length of the keyboard until dust stops falling out
  3. Wipe the keyboard dust on the floor with the feather duster

  4. Do NOT spray Windex  cleaner on the keyboard -
    spray cleaner on the paper towel, then wipe keyboard down
  5. Return the keyboard to working position
III.  Mouse (needs to be done once a month on each PC)
Do NOT spray Windex cleaner on mice.
  1. Test the mouse.  If the cursor moves irratically or slow, follow the cleaning instuctions below
  2. Open the mouse, remove the ball
  3. Place the Velcro mouse cleaner ball in the mouse, close the mouse
  4. Place the Velcro mouse cleaning pad on the tabletop, rotate the mouse around the pad in circular motions several times
  5. Replace the mouse ball and assemble the mouse
  6. Scrape off the grit on the surface of the mouse pad with the ice scraper and wipe it on the floor
IV.  Tabletop
  1. Dust the tabletop with the feather duster
  2. Wipe off graffiti, etc., with Windex cleaner
  3. Alert the Lab Managers of any damage to PCs or tables, missing mouse pads, etc.
V.  Maintenacnce Log
Fill out the "Maintenance Log" in beige cabinet in PDC every time you complete your maintenance.
Suggestions
  • Do the maintenance the same shift/time each week
  • It is best to do this PC  maintenance during a shift that is the least busy (e.g., early morning, late night, or weekend)

  • If you dont work one of these shifts, do it when there is as few users as possible on the PCs you need to maintain.
  • You might do half your PCs one shift, the other half another shift each week.
Inspections
  • Mark and  I will do weekly inspections on your assignments.
  • You are expected to complete your assigned maintenance prior to Monday of each week.
  • The quality and consistency of  your maintenance will effect your semester evaluations.
Cleaning materials 
are in the Beige cabinet in the PDC and include:
  • Feather duster
  • Ice scraper (for mouse pads)
  • Windex cleaner (monitor, tabletops)

  • Paper towels
