Description of ORIE 305: ORIE 305 is a one-semester program required of all first time freshmen entering in the Fall semester at Towson University. Each first time freshman is assigned to an academic advisor who is the leader for a section of ORIE 305. This advisor assists the student in his/her transition to Towson. The advisor also serves as a consultant for educational decision-making and as a resource person during the student ’s first year. The purposes of ORIE 305 are to help students:
a) increase knowledge of the academic programs, policies, and opportunities at Towson;
b) learn and apply skills necessary to make sound decisions about educational programs at Towson; and
c) identify and use resources at the University that enhance their experience.

Rationale Underlying ORIE 305: Students who become knowledgeable about the University; who develop a working relationship with an academic advisor; who develop effective decision-making skills; and who assume responsibility for their own decisions will become successful members of the University community. ORIE 305 is intended to promote these activities and support students in their development as maturing learners.

Learning Objectives: Through ORIE 305, students will:
a) understand the structure of the General Education program at TU;
b) select, schedule, and register for courses for Spring Semester;
c) identify resources available at the University that address their interests and needs; and
d) understand the importance of actively planning their education and maintaining appropriate educational records to support their planning process.

Program Requirements: The basic requirements for each student are to:
a) attend an introductory meeting for his/her section of ORIE 305 during Orientation;
b) complete and submit a Student Advisement Survey;
c) have and use her/his Towson email account to facilitate communication;
d) participate in one group advising meeting to prepare for Spring registration;
e) complete instruction on registration and demonstrate their knowledge and skills in navigating that system; and
f) meet with his/her advisor at least twice during the semester with at least one meeting dedicated to Spring Semester course selection and registration.
Other Program Expectations: It is expected that students will:
a) consult with his/her advisor about making changes in course enrollment, as needed;
b) attend self selected programs or events related to educational and personal development; and
c) create and maintain a folder for educational records and planning.

Any student with a disability or special need is encouraged to discuss this with the advisor as this may have an influence on course selection and other educational decisions.
