Directions: Choose one (1) of the following three (3) projects, complete
the research and write a
five (5) page paper summarizing your findings.
1). Compare two of the following Baltimore markets: Lexington Market
(400 West Lexington),
Hanareum Supermarket (Route 40, West of I695) and Waverly Farmer’s
Market (East 33rd and
University Parkway). Discuss and compare their spatial organization,
their products and the
different populations of vendors and customers in each. Are there
any similarities with the
markets discussed in Paul Stoller’s book, Money Has No Smell?
What do these places suggest
with regards to globalization and global culture?
2). As part of its ongoing public relations campaign, the U.S. government--through
the State
Department--publishes books, films and pamphlets for distribution abroad.
One such recent
publication is Writers in America, a compendium of essays from well-known
U.S. authors
(usinfo.state.gov/products/pubs). Compare three (3) essays in
this volume with three (3) other
selections drawn from class readings, films and additional essays from
Z Magazine (zmag.org).
Discuss.
3). In one sense, computer and video games are just that--games.
But they also bring people--as
players--into the action, making them participants in the events represented
on the screen. For the
sake of this paper, consider these games seriously, and discuss three
(3) of the following as
representations of life in the United States: What kinds
of places are they depicting? Compare
this to English-Lueck’s depictions of Silicon Valley in Cultures@SiliconValley.
