Essay Assignment, Spring 2004: Modernity and Baltimore Blues

5 pages, Double-Spaced

Due May 3, 2004 at the beginning of class.

Directions: Abelmann's and Ong's books describe--in very different ways--the reactions of people to all of the problems, opportunities and dislocations of modernization.  In other words, Abelmann and Ong present the everyday experiences of modernity--i.e., the way people are thinking about their lives and the world around them.  Using Abelmann’s and Ong’s books as touchstones, students will compare the varied experiences of modernity of 2 different groups of people in Baltimore as they make their way amidst inequalities and opportunities. Using a variety of sources, including newspaper articles and film, students will apply the critical vocabulary of anthropology and modernity to a population of their choice.

1. Think about two groups of people living in Baltimore whom you find interesting.

2. Find at least two sources (newspaper articles, films, magazine articles, etc.) for each group (i.e., at least 4 sources--2+2).

3. Compare and contrast their thoughts and experiences.

4. Compare and contrast these to our class readings, lectures and films.

5. Include a bibliography of all sources consulted.

6. Be careful of grammar and spelling mistakes.
