reports and discussion dealing with biological research. Course Description: This
seminar course is required for students earning graduate degrees in the
Department of Biological Sciences.. Each
participant is expected to be actively engaged in the seminar experience- merely
showing up for class is not enough! We
will spend our class time examining a current topic in the biological
literature. Expectations/Guidelines
PROFESSIONALISM As part of your preparation for becoming a scientist, you will be expected to act in a professional manner. This includes: Attendance & Punctuality: Class time is used to clarify
issues we are discussing. Class
will be interactive in nature and it will be difficult to make up in the event
of an absence. Be on time and
don’t leave early. Students are
expected to attend every class. Genuine
emergencies may be excused; otherwise grades will be lowered in proportion to
the number of classes missed. Each
absence after three may result in a reduction of one letter grade. If a genuine emergency occurs which causes an absence, give
an explanatory note to the instructor on the first day of return to class.
Participation: Participation doesn’t mean simply attending class.
Participate in the class discussion and activities by making meaningful
comments. Ask questions! Respect: Be considerate of others. Behave
in a professional, ethical manner. Attitude: Be curious, flexible, organized, and patient- all
characteristics of good teachers. Assessment: This is a seminar course. Your grade is based on your presentation (30%), your written
summary and bibliography (30%), your attendance (20%), and willingness to
participate (20%). CLASS SCHEDULE 9/3 Introduction to seminar components 9/10
