FOURTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

ON ETHNOMATHEMATICS (ICEM-4)

TOWSON, MARYLAND, USA

JULY 25-30, 2010

The Executive Board of the International Study Group on Ethnomathematics, meeting at in Auckland, New Zealand, in February 2006, selected Towson (near Baltimore), Maryland, USA, to be the site of the Fourth International Conference on Ethnomathematics (ICEM-4) in 2010.

NOTE: A new ICEM-4 website will be launched soon.  Check back here for a link to the new site when it opens.

The ICEMs are conferences of the International Study Group on Ethnomathematics (ISGEm).  They provide an opportunity for those interested in ethnomathematics to gather to exchange ideas formally in papers, less formally in demonstrations and field trips, and socially in conference events.  The first ICEM was held in 1998 in Granada, Spain, followed in 2002 by ICEM-2 (II-CIEM) in Ouro Preto, Brazil.  Auckland, New Zealand hosted ICEM-3 in February 2006.  Thus, the fourth conference will located in a fourth continent!  Also, 2010 will celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of ISGEm.

ICEM-4 will be held in the summer of 2010, July 25-30.

The Chief Organizer will be Lawrence Shirley, and his institution, Towson University, in Towson, Maryland, a suburb of Baltimore, will be the location of the sessions.  The local sponsors of the conference are the Fisher College of Science and Mathematics and the Department of Mathematics.

Some discussions of plans and arrangements for the conference will be held at the meeting of the North American Study Group on Ethnomathematics (NASGEm) in April 2009 as a part of the in Washington DC.  (Earlier we made some plans at the International Congress on Mathematical Education, in July 2008, at Monterrey, Mexico (in the  Discussion Group 18 on Ethnomathematics).

If you  have suggestions or wish to volunteer to help with logistics, arrangements, program, ideas, etc., please contact the organizer at LShirley@towson.edu.

As plans develop, all information on the program, registration, and arrangements will be posted on this webpage.  We expect to have inexpensive dormitory accommodations available, as well as rooms in nearby hotels.  Also, we hope to include an excursion and/or field trip as part of the program, especially linking to interactions of mathematics and local culture.

If you know of potential sponsors or other funding possibilities, please contact the organizer (  LShirley@towson.edu ) as soon as possible.  Good external support can help us try to limit the cost of registration!

Also we are seeking design suggestions for a logo.

Please send any queries, comments, and suggestions to Lawrence Shirley at LShirley@towson.edu
